Serious cinema buffs who go to the theater for some food for thought as well as entertainment might wonder how can films with senseless action and songs do such good business? The fact is that the film business has changed and any film that reaches the 100 crore mark is declared a hit, and this was was proven once again by Rowdy Rathore.
ROWDY RATHORE has been going strong since June 1, 2012. That it would be hugely appreciated was a given fact but that it will be the highest grosser of 2012 was certainly a surprise. It has already amassed 115 crore in 16 days and can easily cross the 122 crore that Agneepath made. So what made the film tick? Was the fact that it is a complete entertainer, and had a mass appeal, the only reasons. No one can pinpoint one reason as a number of things have gone well for the movie.
First and foremost, the film is a remake of Ravi Teja starer Telugu film Vikramarkudu and Tamil film Siruthai. This instantly added mass appeal as both north Indian audience and South Indian audience were intrigued to check out the film. Moreover,
Akshay Kumar has his fame as being the action hero and his fans too wanted to see the actor in his rowdiest best, as that is the way the promos were aired. Then to add to the star cast, the director, Prabhu Deva is also a favourite, and who would want to give the dancing star's debut a miss?
The makers also played it quite safe as they knew that action plus Akshay Kumar plus Sonakshi Sinha is surely the magnets required to attract the audience to the theater. We must not forget that Sonakshi Sinha's first movie, Dabangg, was the highest grosser of 2010. Thus, to take her as the female lead was the most safe bet by the filmmaker.
These days to get a good Friday opening is not enough. With films such as 3 Idiots, Dabangg and Bodygaurd, a good commercial film has to cross the coveted 100 crore number. Thus, the filmmakers are also getting bold in this genre of brand name actors plus action film and some sprinkling of good item number and a very high priced heroine. If we look into the highest grossers of the past years we would see only two genre dominating - comedy and action. 3 Idiots grossed 202 crore in 2009, Dabangg got 140 crore in 2010, Ra.One got 114 crore and Don 2 made 106 crore. These figures are that of the box office returns of India only. All the films were from either comedy or action or both. Gone are the days of celebration if a movie runs in the theaters for 100 days. Now, in the new era 100 crore ensures party for a very long time.
