The soothing charm of Kachari Ghat in Guwahati
Kachari Ghat is a favorite place for hangouts for the city residents. Kachari Ghat also offers the perfect cooling environment for people exhausted by the sweltering heat during summers.

WITH THE mercury on the upswing, the Kachari Ghat on the southern bank of Brahmaputra has turned into a favourite hangout for the city residents. With soothing riverside puff of air flowing, families and young couples find it the perfect place for spending their evening leisure time.

Apart from the government boating and steamer services, Kachari Ghat also offers the perfect cooling environment for people exhausted by the sweltering heat during summers. It can be evidenced if one goes to the place between four and five in the evening with tourists and visitors strolling in and around the river.

Ranjit Bhuyan, a state government employee said, “I often come to Kachari Ghat particularly during the summers to rejuvenate my mind and body. It offers a perfect mix of natural beauty and cool breeze.”

This place also draws a huge number of tourists coming from different corners of the country in addition to people from abroad. CK Subramanian, a tourist from Salem in Tamil Nadu was pretty categorical in his approach and said, “Assam has a pleasant weather even during the summers as compared to my home state. This can be felt even more near the bank of Brahmaputra.”

It is also a preferred place for the young couples to beat the ignominy of the hustle and bustle of city-life. One of them on condition of anonymity said, “I just love this place. I can bet that this is the best place of Guwahati as far as spending quality time is concerned.”

Adding to the flavour of the place are the raw-coconut sellers during the dry and uncomfortable summers and the fast-food outlets. When the people after having a look at the place decides to sit at a place and marvel at the beauty of the river, most of them prefer to have a raw-coconut to quench their thirst.

The government ferry service on the river Brahmaputra runs between 7AM to 5PM from Kachari Ghat carrying mostly the salaried class and the daily wage earners.

Nabajit Rajkhowa, a daily wage earner who stays on the north bank and commutes daily by steamers said, “During the summers, I usually spend sometime near the river before moving to my workplace as it provides me the much needed impetus to last through the stressful day.”

Even during winters, Kacharighat remains one of the favourite spots for family picnics with huge sand bars dotting the area and adding to the fervor of the place. With a panoramic view, it has always drawn people and tourists to its fold.
