The tribes of good times: MP tribals known for guzzling country liquor now prefer drinking beer
35-year old Vestiya of Sorva village in Madhya Pradesh's tribal belt of Alirajpur used a bow to shoot an arrow at his friend who had not invited him for a beer party.

As per officials, this is not the first such case in this tribal belt, known for guzzling country liquor. Having developed a taste for beer filled in glass bottles which they consider liquid gold, the tribals are ready to fight for their drinks. For them a bottle of beer is something to kill for.

As per data released by the excise department, beer consumption is much more in the tribal belt of Alirajpur and Jhabua than in the city of Indore. Vinod Raghuvanshi, deputy commissioner (excise) says that the tribals of the area have shifted from country liquor made of mahua and taddi to beer. He said, "This calls for a social study to know the changing tastes of tribals."

According to excise department's data, while Indore district consumed 11,19,701 cases of beer in 2015, the tribal belt of Alirajpur and Jhabua consumed a whopping 39,34,923 cases in the same period. And the trends have continued through 2016.

A photographer in Alirajpur, Anil Tawar, said, "Jhabua and Alirajpur have taken to beer because local drinks do not give them the kick. They prepare a mixture of a whiskey quarter and a pint of beer."

Another example of changing times is visible in the fact that women of this tribal area are not far behind in consumption of beer.

Raju Bhilka, a villager, said, "Tribal women drink beer differently. They drink from their palms. During the annual Bhagoria festival women are seen drinking beer along with their friends."
