The truth about slimming centres and miracle pills
Slimming centres and weight loss centres only lighten your pocket and waste precious time. You may lose weight after visiting these centres but once you stop frequenting them, you might re-gain lost weight. Bad diet and pills with side effects are other major consequences of these slimming centres.

GURGAON BEING a ‘corporate park’ has comparatively a higher percentage of people working in multi-national corporations and other offices, and all of them have a demanding working life. With busy schedules working professionals depend on a gym or a fitness club, where they can burn their extra calories without giving adequate attention to appropriate diet. This gives them temporary respite and in few months they look for detrimental readymade solutions – slimming centres – and will go to any length to shed the extra flab as fast as possible – even believing the false and flashy promises dished out by slimming centres.

Billboards and banners posted in every market place in Gurgaon will inform you about the ‘best’ slimming centre in the Millennium City. These centres claim to have magic pills that cut tummy fat but a gullible person fails to decipher this lie. As a temporary mechanism, these pills and machines cut tummy fat but as soon as you stop having the pills, not only will you gain weight disproportionately – the pills have many side effects including hormonal imbalance. Mostly, people in the 24-35 age-groups visit such centres. While females look for toned bodies, males want their bulging tummy to be controlled, to stay clear of the rebuke of the ladies at home.

As many of you know or have experienced, once you enter such slimming or weight loss centres, the cute and zero-figure salesgirls will show you around after your pocket has been emptied. Then starts the ‘slimming’ process – first they will show you the machines, which not only damage the skin but also the cells beneath it. The mechanism involved dehydrates your body cells, which gives a feeling that you have lost a few inches but this is a temporary process and you will get back those inches with just few glasses of water.

In the next step, you will be taken to a nutritionist who will administer a crash diet for you. You may feel full after munching on the prescribed diet because the diet suggested is a fibre-rich one. In common language we can say that you are programmed by the slimming centre to eat less food than your actual dietary needs. This will ensure quick weight loss but there is no guarantee about the effects that it will have on your health. Besides, you will lose weight from all the body parts, not particular parts such as tummy or thighs.

You will be asked to avoid weight training, lest your muscle weight might increase. This is the worst prescription as ‘the higher your muscle percentage, higher is your metabolism’ and that in turn will increase the rate of fat burn. You might also be referred to a doctor who will give you laxatives, appetite suppressants, fat burners or fat absorbers without your knowledge, which, they might give you in the form of Ayurvedic or Herbal medicines. After all, who would doubt a doctor?

After you are done with all the sessions, much to your disappointment, you will witness something that you never dreamt of – you will have lost all your muscles, your bones would become weak, your skin would be dull and emancipated, and your hair will have grown thin and lost all its shine and sheen. Is this what you were looking for? You have achieved the targeted weight loss but at the cost of your health and hard-earned money.

Unfortunately, there are no laws governing such slimming centres or so called weight loss clinics. As a nutritionist, I would always suggest to stick to natural diets. If you lose weight naturally, there is no point regaining weight but a diet with proper composition of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and vitamins needs to be taken from your childhood.

Therefore, the safest way to lose excess fat is by means of balanced diet and regular exercise. Stick to a balanced diet and rise early to take a walk in the fresh morning air – this is the only mantra of staying fit and healthy.
