The truths of life - Part I
Life is a highly complicated set of many sub-sets like happiness and sorrow, brightness and darkness, ups and downs, unexpected happenings and mis-happenings, relationships and breakdowns, friends and foes, richness and poverty and so on.

THE PRECEPTS of economics are seen in all walks of lives and have much more relevance in our lives than we can possibly imagine. Economic events, though sometimes appear to be far away from us, but they are closely linked with us.

Life is a highly complicated set of many sub-sets like happiness and sorrow, brightness and darkness, ups and downs, unexpected happenings and mis-happenings, evitable and inevitable, relationships and breakdowns, friends and foes, smoothness and roughness, richness and poverty, work and leisure, lust, anger, greed and excessive attachment and so on and so forth. It is very difficult to understand the essence and purpose of life.

This article is an attempt these very fascinating truths of life. These are:

Firstly, survival is a basic built-in instinct in humans. The secret of long life (say up to 100 years) is summarised in four factors: diet, exercise, psycho-spiritual and social behaviour. There are also the ten commandments of a long life.

These commandants are both age specific and universal, ensuring that we do not merely survive but have a long and wholesome life. They include:

  • Avoid exposure to certain ‘poisons’ like alcohol and smoking, which actually increase the ageing process, apart from causing many health problems
  • Remain sociable, with goos relations with family, relations and associates. In fact, a study even claims that a good marriage can add as much as seven years to a man’s life and two years to a woman’s life.
  • Be at calm with the place where you live and ensure that it is in a healthy environment
  • Indulge a little in the so-called vices such as wine, chocolate and excessive sleep, as they have a good effect. This is so as what one likes doing, can do them good rather than harm.
  • Exercise the brain by being creative by playing Sudoku, cards, reading and writing, listening to soothing music, writing poetry and so on.
  • Go for regular medical check-ups like lipid profile and the like.
  • Watch what you eat.
  • Put more excitement into your life and make it more enjoyable.
  • Embrace any new technologies and change with time.
  • Smile, have subtle humour and feel happier with whatever the almighty has given you.

Secondly, it is said that the root of all evil is money. This is true only when it is wrongly, illegally and unethically earned and used in a nefarious way via rent-seeking and directly unproductive profit-seeking activities. But, if money is properly used and morally and legally earned, it makes us ‘deserving’ rich.

One must use money properly, knowing that in acquiring money, they do not merely manipulate material forces in one's favour but, attract money to us. The other side of the picture is that the failure to acquire money is basically an act of repulsion on one's part. Both of these concepts – learning how to attract money, and how to put it to proper use, depend on understanding what exactly our needs are.

We should not waste it to the extent that it is no longer reprehensible. We should not wait for good fortune to smile on us. We should be secure in ourselves and be aware of the fact that we and our inner-self are an integral part of the cosmic reality. When we have that consciousness of living already in abundance, then, we will attract more abundance. The power to attract money and even success of every kind, is directly proportional to our ability to recognise and attune ourselves to a greater reality than our own.
