The UN has been found wanting in the Middle East
Common people are up in arms in many Arab and Muslim countries in the Middle East. And its the autocratic and military rulers who are facing the heat. But the UN instead of pressing for peaceful negotiation has opted to send its troops.
AFTER FACING the dark times of brutal dictatorship, and being ruled like slaves for decades, people in Libya followed the footsteps of their fellow revolutionaries in Yemen, Egypt, and Tunisia, and stood against political torture in the country.

Soon, an uprising by a few people spread nation wide, and people, fed of being exploited and being taken for granted, attacked the brutal rulers - even if it required the use of weapons. But an important question that needs to be asked is, why is UN not pressing for peaceful negotiations and instead is sending out troops to ensure lack of casualties?

The Libyan revolutionaries are not against the army nor as much against their ruler President Gaddafi, but it’s for democracy, for civil rights, for betterment of downtrodden people and against decades of suffering of human rights in the country that they are fighting for.

There was a time when Libya was amongst one of the richest country in whole Africa but due to the greed of Gaddafi, it suffered, its people suffered and resulted in an uprising. Libya was blamed for supporting terrorism, it was being bombed after Libya supported terrorists hijacking a U.S passenger plane, which ultimately resulted in the death of all the people in the plane.

All these incidences tested the patience of people when President Gaddafi was resting in his bunker during the Libyan bombing by U.S. planes. However, the worst thing that emerged out of this uprising was that the army is still supporting the president and is bombing their own civilians and at the same time UNO is still deciding whether to take any army action against Libya or not for such an inhuman step against their own people.

This also showed that how weak UNO has become that it has to think of sending out the army instead of official negotiations for which UNO was created i.e. to circumvent war. “Peace process at negotiation”, is what the statement that always comes out of UNO.

Also, due to oil politics, developed countries are hesitant to act strongly against the Libyan President. It seems, where lies democracy and civil rights is no one’s concern.
