The Unraveling: Pakistan in the Age of Jihad - Book Review
The book 'The Unraveling: Pakistan in the Age of Jihad ' is in news these days since it describes the fate of a nuclear Islamic nation if it is eventually taken over by jihadist and sectarian groups.

THE BOOK authored by John R. Schmidt, who has served as political counselor at the US embassy in Islamabad, describes analytically the recent history and turn of events in the region that led to a relatively tolerant Islamic nation and an ally of US into a rogues' gallery of domestic jihadist groups and radical Al Qaeda militants.

According to the book, the Pakistani rulers are to be blamed for allowing the nation to become a haven for Al Qaeda. The book provides a vivid and rational account of the complex relationship between the leaders of Pakistan and jihadist groups. It reasons out well how the Pakistani rulers' intentions and decisions have led their nuclear country to a failed state.

Published by Pan Macmillan, the book says that Pakistan is almost on the brink of disaster and has put its neighboring nations at risk. The author holds that initially Pakistan appeased, sheltered and promoted Islamic radicals to advance their foreign-policy goals against neighboring countries. But radical groups patronized by Pakistani rulers turned against them after 9/11, when the rulers became a partner of US for war on terror.

The book holds out that a jihadist takeover of Pakistan with its nuclear arsenal is most likely to lead to a joint Indo-American military assault on it (Pakistan). The author argues that if the jihadist takeover of Pakistan happens, its army will disintegrate leading to nukes in the hands of radicals which India and the US would never like.

The book, in a well-argued form of political analysis hints at the possibility of dismantling of Pakistan and its re-absorption into India.
