The voyage from 2G to Hemaji
The year was probably 1980 and it was my first encounter with film star Hema Malini at Kamalistan Studio, Mahakali, Mumbai on the set of 'Razia Sultan.' There was a dialogue - 'Kya Razia ne apna who haseen wada pourah naheen kiya.' Despite several retakes and efforts, the veteran director Kamal Amrohi failed to extract out the right effect he was looking for from his herione.

Hema, with her South Indian Urdu was never a cut-out for the role of a royal Mamlook princess. The real problem was the grand stature of Kamal Saheb and nobody dared to express this view before the Cecil D Miles of India. Dharmendra was a chocolate hero and the role of Yaqout - the royal slave was also a far cry for him. With the finest of songs and sets, 'Razia Sultan' was a miserable flop and this trinity of hero, heroine and director was responsible for that tragedy.

The girl who entered the Hindi film industry with Raj Kapur's 'Sapnon Ka Soudagar' was a beauty unmatched and that made her journey almost easy to progress. From film world to the personal world of Dharmendra, she and Dharmendra changed their religion to Islam and then Bhagwan knows where they stand on the altar of belief today. This journey is a very personal one and this scribe is not interested to delve into that.

The Lady Luck has always been kind to her. In the latest development the Bollywood Dream Girl Hema Malini is allotted a prime 2,000-square-metre plot in the suburban upmarket Oshiwara area for her proposed dance academy. Needless to say that she is the Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha member.

According to documents procured under the Right to Information (RTI) by activist Anil Galgali, Hema Malini was allotted the plot worth crores of rupees for a paltry Rs.70,000. The details of the allotment to Hema Malini from the Mumbai Suburban District Collectorate showed that she was given the land at only Rs.35 per square metre. She plans to start a dance academy on a plot of land in Mumbai's Andheri area.

It was an stale news that "Not only that, this is the second time Hema Malini has been allotted a prime plot in the Mumbai suburbs. Earlier, in 1997, the (then) Shiv Sena-BJP government had given her a plot of land, but she could not develop it due to CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) issues." On record, a notice was served to her by the Mumbai Suburban Collector on August 28, 1998, copy of which has been obtained by Mr. Galgali.

The notice was addressed to Malini, as a trustee of Natyavihar Kala Kendra Charity Trust, asking her as to why "this office" (of the suburban collector) should not tell the state government to cancel the letter of intent for the allotment as norms of the CRZ Act were violated. She has not yet returned the earlier plot, the current government has allotted her another plot.

Comparing it with the another largesse, a Congress Party Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Shukla was also allotted a plot in Andheri West when his party ruled the state. A vociferous controversy was generated by then opposition BJP-Shiv Sena and he was forced to surrender it in February 2014 - just before the Lok Sabha elections.

Another plot of 1,741 square metres in the same locality in April 1997 was never developed, nor did she raise 25 per cent of the project cost, but continues to retain that plot.

With the latest allotment, the Hema Malini Dance Academy's cultural complex project is expected to cost around Rs.18.49 crore for which she is yet to submit proof of availability of 25 per cent funds and resources to raise the balance 75 per cent. The RTI reply said the academy has only around Rs.3.5 crore - less than the 25 per cent minimum requirement, and it was unclear about the balance 75 per cent.

There is an old saying: "Aouron ki buree baat to bhati naheen mujh ko; par apni buraayee nazar aati naheen mujh ko" (We can't tolerate the faults of others while our own are unseen by us).

Let us recall the time when UPA was sworn in power in 2004 after NDA lost power with Dr. Manmohan Singh as the head of the Govt as PM. Till the year 2008 things went off well with Left support and a Common Minimum program, which never allowed UPA to deviate from its path of welfare of Aam Aadmi (common man) then came the NUCLEAR DEAL with USA, moment where Left broke away and UPA survived with SP Support. That is the time when UPA 1 lost balance and the scams like Coal Gate, CWG, 2G were being done and later came to light in the term of UPA 2 with CAG reports indicting the UPA government of huge losses to the ex chequer worth Lacs of Crores.

Unfortunately, a man of high personal integrity and able Economist - Dr Singh could not rein in some of his allies and the ministers who bungled with money. The precious national resources like Coal & Spectrum were squandered at throw away prices to Private Players which is also called CRONY CAPITALISM.

Once the CAG (A Constitutional body who audits Government Accounts) reports on 2G Spectrum was tabled total mayhem broke out as then it was the largest scam in the history of India with an approx estimated loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crores to the Public Exchequer. The government tried to put a brave face in 2G scam, putting out famous Zero Loss Theories, defending A Raja and also blaming it on Coalition Politics.

Anyone who is glued to the idiot box these days is guaranteed to enjoy the similar defense arguments when the favors conferred upon Ramdev and Hema Malini by the new Sultans are discussed in TV debates. BJP's national spokesperson Samvid Patra looks a worn out, disoriented and spent-out demagogue.
