IT COMES as no surprise that the movie, 3 Idiots has got much deserved success and popularity, one of the major hits of the year 2009, has been widely appreciated by all age groups of our society and has also had a positive impact on the mindsets of the people.
The movie has also been outstandingly popular because of its strong message on taking up a career of one’s own choice and not out of force. A forced upon career, can never bring long lasting success. Aamir Khan through his role has emphasized on learning through fun and interest. This not only helps us sharpen our unique qualities but keeps us content as well. Forced to take up a subject, course, career or vocation only becomes a burden that we have no interest in and have an aversion for. It has a negative impact not only on our personality but also on our mental health as it curbs our desires, interests and free will. On making the choices we should not keep in mind how other people would react or respond but should solely focus on where our interest lies so that a career so chosen has little space for fate/chance to play with. Thus, the movie has successfully sent out this strong and positive social message. Another reason for its success is the well thought and elegantly crafted humor that has marvelous jobs done by Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. They have successfully played the role of today’s youth making it very easy to relate to their struggles, crucial moments of self- discovery, enlightenment and dilemma faced. One problem that the movie has carefully pointed out is that our education system only recognizes and encourages students who perform brilliantly in academics giving no space for weaker students. The system assesses a student’s knowledge on the basis of a certain questions/examinations. I do not believe that a student’s knowledge can be solely judged that way. My being not so well versed with a certain topic does not raise a question on my level of knowledge. Even an uneducated person knows all about his family, culture, traditions, customs - is this not knowledge? Or is it that only the people who attend schools, colleges and universities are the ones with sharp minds and intellect. Well, it is a complicated problem in existence with no solution. The movie points out that mugging up only helps us to clear a certain examination, it is shortlived and does not add to our knowledge and therefore, it can never be fulfilling. Things done with interest not only enhance our skills and knowledge but also inculcate in us a sense of pleasure and satisfaction. I believe that a movie should not only play a role in entertaining but also influencing our lives in a constructive and positive way, must say that 3 Idiots has been a gigantic success with it.
