MARSHALL MCLUHAN aptly coined the term the global village as the world is actually coming together thanks to virtual media. To add a latest example to this would be the theatre group that is using Skype to communicate, act and rehearse with their counterparts in India. Skype is such an important part of their day now that the actors can’t imagine a single rehearsal without a computer.
This also reflects the big shift we are having each day and also the changing face of theatre.
The revolutionary play, which is sure to go down in history due to its extensive use of Skype, is called Success, Next Exit. It was scripted 20 years ago by John Kishline and has been acted across the US then. Now the modified version of the same play is about to happen in India and so they are rehearsing on a daily basis and thanks to Skype the Indian actors who have been incorporated in the play is also included on a daily basis. One of the noted actors Kriti Pant have been included in this critically acclaimed play.
Director Edward Morgan wanted to touch the sensitivities of Indian women and for that he felt it necessary to have an Indian woman in the cast. However, he acknowledges the fact that Skype made everyone’s life easy and it would have been difficult without the technology.
Kriti Pant, who truly understood the importance of technology due to her daily Skype rehearshals also adds that technology has not only made life easy for all but have made the procurements of many things very easy. These days thanks to technology everyone can access Archives, brochures and the likes from different part of the world.
Talking about her Skype combined with theatre experience Kriti told a reputed media, “One can share information electronically and communicate with fellow actors continents away. Several Indian theatre repertories are using the Internet and communication tools to reach out to the world and expand creative scope.”
