ONE OF the most traditional forms of entertainment has regained momentum amongst youngsters. Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication-Pune, observed its three days theatre fest with an innovative theatre concept ‘Zehan’ with a tag line ‘Keeda Hai to Hai’ during December 22 to 24, 2009.
The concept talked about the keeda of hatred, keeda of terriorism, keeda of corruption and keeda of politics that is eating not only our country but also entire world making each one of us insensitive towards the pains suffered by others in the journey of getting name, fame and power. Theatre performances are not merely entertainment but also a strong form of social media touching varied aspects of human lives. Students are actively participating in these theatre plays and workshops. It is interesting to note that most of these theatre group are formed out of strong passion to show them on stage talent and are not merely the source of living for these theatre performers. “We all are settled in our jobs or business and we perform these theatre acts and workshops merely out of passion associated to it,” says Cyrus Dastur- a theatre artist from Banglore based theatre group- Yours truly. The difference between the theatre and film is the difference between the reality and perception. In films, the characters can be manipulated, scenes can be cut, retakes can be done, voice over can be put up while in theatre, artists have no other chance to retake. “It is the real flesh and skin, real height, real voice and the spontaneity of character which differentiates theatre from film” says Arunditi Nag, the creative director of Rangashankara in Bangalore while attending the theatre fest as chief guest at SIMC.
Arunditi Nag being a famous personality in theatre world is also an onscreen actress who recently played grandmother of Amitabh Bachhan in Paa. She is one of the best observer of film world where it takes hours to play and take the final shots in films as well as theatre world where she has observed and played spontaneous characters on theatre stage and hence also the best person to judge the differentiation between the two. However, the basic idea of these theatre groups is not only to educate the worldly politics and affairs to audience but also to entertain them. Yours Truly – the Bangalore theatre group works on innovate concept of playing spontaneous theatre act on topics given by audience. This spontaneity is mesmerising and leaves an ever lasting impact on audiences’ mind. There is a growing trend observed in youngsters joining the theatre group as it not only helps in grooming an overall personality of individual but also helps in real life where they have to take many spontaneous decisions and deal with the challenging situations.
