There is still time for the Congress to save the alliance
The alliance between Akhilesh and Mayawati will benefit the BJP by splitting the anti-BJP votes between the alliance and the Congress but senior local leaders of the Congress could still negotiate a deal with the two.

Senior leaders in the Congress like Pramod Tiwari who have the experience and the magnetic presence to take the party forward and are well networked in the system are today having no say in what the Congress should do in Uttar Pradesh.

Negotiating a deal with the Mayawatis or the Akhilesh Yadavs of the state would have been a piece of cake for a person with Tiwari's acumen.

For the Congress party it seems there is trouble ahead as the party has decided not to let go of its claim in Uttar Pradesh where it feels that it shall win at least 21 seats as the voters are totally committed to a change in the scene and want to see the NDA out and the UPA in without the Dalits and the OBCs playing a role in the government formation.

The two parties that have forged an alliance in UP have not included the Congress in this alliance and the Congress is counting upon the irritation of the masses with the present state of governance in the state to help it come to power.

There is definitely irritation and uneasiness among a large section of the rural community and Congress obviously plans to take up the issues of the farmers in Uttar Pradesh to win the elections here.

To do this it has come up with plans like loan waivers and other sops.

Congress has definitely suffered a setback as it is now faced with a catch 22 situation. If it fights alone it will help the BJP win by splitting the anti BJP votes for at the end of the day there is no divine decree or favour that can twist the mathematics of caste vote banks in the state.

How the Congress leadership will steer itself through this crisis and create a situation where it can grab a piece of the action for itself in the state remains to be seen.
