Think before you vote in 2014 to choose your government
Narendra Modi has the RSS and the Sangh Parivar; Rahul has an imperfect but experienced Congress; third front formed six government under six prime ministers under a total of 5 years in power from 1977 to 1999. Who do you want to vote for?

Modi and many are up in arms against the Congress. They have every reason to do so. We have arguably the weakest prime minister leading India, a prime minister who never speaks, who never acts, who has no control over the functioning of his council of ministers and appears to be afraid to confront Pakistan or China.

Scam after scam is rocking the parliament. Food inflation is going through the roof. The Rupee is going through the floor. Trade and current account deficits are at all time high level. Corruption, nepotism, crony capitalism, and minority appeasement have reached new heights.

Even the Congress is confused as to what is its ideology. On one side we have Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh etc who are pro poor and pro "Aam Admi" and have brought legislations like RTI, MNREGA, Food Security Bill, Land Acquisition Bill for the benefit of poors and given rights to Adivasis over forest produce and their ancestral land.

On the other side we have the PM, Finance Minister Chidambaram, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Anand Sharma and others doing their best to protect the interests of the politicians, the rich and big business with an ordinance to allow convicted politicians to contest elections and their neo-liberal economic policies and economic reforms. But what is Your Alternative?

Voting for BJP or RSS?

When you vote for BJP, are you voting for Modi rule or RSS rule? You may think that you are voting for Modi rule, but you are actually voting for RSS because RSS anointed Modi as PM candidate and will claim its pound of flesh if he wins.

When you vote for BJP, you are actually voting for "Bharat" and not "India"; you are voting for Hindu Raj and Hindutva; you are voting for return to traditional Hindu society ; you are voting for a system where elders lay down the law in the family ; and maybe you are voting for moral policing that happens during Valentine's Day.

BJP actually represents government of businessmen, by businessmen and for businessmen. Small businessmen and traders in urban India and refugee families from West Pakistan are its primary vote bank. So when you vote for BJP, you are voting for neo-liberal economic policies which benefit mainly the rich and the middle class or 3 to 5 % of the population.

Vajpayee came to power on the agenda of "Swadeshi" but quickly discarded it and its protagonists like Govindacharya. BJP's "India Shining" campaign flopped in 2004 because India was not shining. Only 3-5% India was shining. Modi was trying to say that Congress has neglected the Defense Services. The truth of the matter is that the only real large scale modernization of Indian Army was done by Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Could any BJP or RSS leader educate me on what major modernization or acquisition of equipment took place during the NDA rule? Vajpayee can only be given credit for sanctioning "The Married Accommodation Project (MAP)" which is making up the shortfall of married accommodation in the defense forces.

BJP keeps agitating against food inflation. What is their plan to bring down onion prices and prices of other food items? Have they done anything in states they rule? BJP talks about dynastic rule in the Congress. Has it ever raised its voice against dynastic rule in their NDA allies Shiromani Akali Dal or Shiv Sena?

BJP calls the Congress, pseudo secularists. On one side RSS, which holds the reigns of BJP, is pushing for Hindu Raj, Ram Mandir and Hindutva. On the other side BJP is trying to force 100,000 Muslims to join BJP in the states where they are in power. Muslim rulers converted Hindus into Muslims the same way. Aren't BJP and RSS pseudo secularists?

Other National Alternatives

What are the other national parties you can vote for? There are the Communists. Their mentors in Russia and China have changed their ideologies and organization structure based on necessity. But our communists cannot change to make themselves relevant in the 21st Century. They are pro-poor and for socialistic economic policies. But their cadre appeasing policies, reliance on political violence for gaining power and support for militant trade unionism has made them irrelevant.

There is also the "Aam Admi Party", which is a party of agitators. Do they know how to rule? Are you ready to place your future in the hands of these unknown gods? Let them win Delhi elections and rule first.

The Third and Fourth Fronts

The other option you have is to vote for small regional parties which are ready to come together for personal gains. We have had a number of such governments which were unmitigated disasters for the country. The first such government formed by the Janta Party (a combination of Congress (O), Swatantra Party, Socialist Party of India, Bhartiya Jan Sangh and Lok Dal) with Moraji Desai as PM.

It lasted for about two years (March 77 to July 79).The second such government was Bhartiya Lok Dal government. In July 1979, the Janta Dal government collapsed when prime ministerial ambition got the better of Chowdury Charan Singh and he broke away to form a government with Congress support.

Charan Singh holds the record of being the sole Prime Minister of India who did not face the Lok Sabha even for a single day during his short tenure of just a month. The day before the Lok Sabha was due to meet for the first time, the Indian National Congress (INC) withdrew their support from his Bharatiya Lok Dal Government and it collapsed.

The third such government was formed by the National Front (formed by amalgamating Jan Morcha, Janta Dal, Lok Dal, Congress S and regional parties like Telegu Desam, DMK, AGP and supported by BJP and the Communists from outside) after the 1989 election.

VP Singh became the prime minister for a year (December 1989 to November 1990). The fourth government came when VP Singh was forced to resign when Chandra Sekhar and his group left his coalition to form a government with support of INC. Chandra Sekhar government lasted about seven months (Nov 1990 to July 1991).

The fifth such government called the United Front, the first non BJP; non Congress government was formed in 1996 when the Congress party lost decisively but no other party won enough seats to form a government. A third front government was formed with the support of the INC from outside.

Deve Gowda became prime minister for about 10 months (June 1996 to April 1997). He was replaced as prime minister by Inder Kumar Gujral who was prime minister for about 10 months (April 1997 to March 1998).

Thus we see that non Congress, non BJP governments have been formed five time in the period from 1977 to 1998. The governments ruled for a total of 4 years and 10 months with 6 different prime ministers. Is this the kind of government you want to vote for?

The Congress Option

The Congress party has ruled for about 57 of 66 years of independent India. Arguably, it is the fountain head of all that is good and bad in our country. Nehru laid the foundation of modern India with his focus on heavy industries, institutions like Atomic Energy Commission, Indian Space Research Organizations, Shipping Corporation of India, Indian Institutes of Technology and All India Institutes of Medical sciences.

He also allowed corruption, nepotism and crony capitalism to thrive and almost disbanded the armed force. Shastri laid the foundation of the first Green Revolution and resurrected the armed forces. Indira Gandhi, my choice for the greatest of Indian Prime Ministers, modernized the armed forces and comprehensively defeated Pakistan in battle.

She defied the US and other western powers, annexed Sikkim, liberated Bangladesh, nationalized banks and multinational companies, and firmly established India as an Asian power. She also encouraged psychofancy and weakened many institutions. Rajeev Gandhi continued to modernize the armed forces, and stood toe to toe with China when it tried incursions into Arunachal.

He brought in computers, IT and developed urban and rural telephone networks. His Sri Lanka adventure and attempts to provide clean administration failed and he gave in to minority appeasement.

Narsimha Rao inherited a bad economic situation and succumbed to IMF pressure on economic policies. He allowed the demolition of Babri Masjid. Manmohan Singh government, particularly UPA2 has been a disaster.

Conclusion

Third and fourth fronts formed 6 governments with 6 different prime ministers during less than 5 year. Modi has the Sangh Parivar. Rahul has an imperfect but experienced Congress. Non Congress, non BJP governments last an average of less than one year. My dear Indians! Young or old; male or female! Do you have any option ?
