Think beyond the tiger for India's wildlife
Apart from the tiger, many other animals are endangered. Why we are not paying any attention to this problem? Snow leopard, Gangetic dolphin, star tortoise, porcupine, butterfly, vulture, etc are ignored by the conservationists too
UNDOUBTABLY TIGER is an endangered species, but it does not mean that we contemplate upon only the tiger’s well-being. There is need to think of the other animals too. If not, other animals are in danger of extinction and may disappear from this world without our being aware of it.
A comparision with cricket comes to our mind. When compared to cricket, other games are absolutely ignored. Perhaps, due to this, in the history of Indian hockey for the first time we could not qualify for the Olympics when hockey is our national game. In this episode, we can not blame any single person like KPS Gill. De facto entire system is accountable for this debacle. Cricket is one of the foremost reasons for this dismal state of affairs of hockey. Stepbrotherly treatment must be stopped immediately. Otherwise, other games will be suffocated out of existence in India without getting anyone’s notice. Similarly, in our country, we pay consideration towards protecting tigers, whereas, so many other animals too are endangered position. Why we are not paying any attention to this problem?
Snow leopard, Gangetic dolphin, star tortoise, porcupine, butterfly, vulture, etc are also endangered species. But no one seems concerned about their welfare. Everyone is talking about tigers only. Smuggling of butterflies from Sikkim is in full swing nowadays. Star tortoise is too being smuggled. In America, its demand is very high. Many rare animals are being killed for different purposes in India. Dr Asad Rahmani, director of Bombay Natural History Society is concerned over this condition. He wonders why Indian government never thinks beyond tigers? If this condition persists, other animals may vanish soon. Furthermore, elephants, musk-deer, leopards, woodpeckers are a dying breed. As per expert opinion, total population of snow leopard is only 100-200. But the Indian government refuses to accept this figure. Death/killing of tigers is lesser than that of snow leopards. In spite of that the tiger is in the list of the government for protection, while others are not. Well, Indian Animal Protection Act, 1972 is also not flawless. Similarly, other laws which are persisting in India are not foolproof. People go scot-free after killing endangered animals. If anybody comes in net of law, he escapes after paying petty fine. This is indeed ridicules condition. Salman Khan, Nawab Pataudi and such celebrities consider hunting their hobby. Despite this, they did not get any harsh chastisement from the court of law. The existing of ’Mother Nature’ depends upon equilibrium between every kind of flora and fauna. But this balance is not being maintained by us. Sensibility does not enter our mind. We are now professionals. We have no time to think about environment. Money is our prime concern. Will Mother Nature put up with our blunder?
