Threats of using "Shared/Public Wi-Fi Networks"
A shared Wi-Fi, is a wireless network that you share with someone or someone shares it with you, e.g. Public Wi-Fi's of Airport, Cafes, Libraries, Clubs, Railway Stations etc.

If someone else is also using the network to which you are connected it is regarded as "Shared" i.e. more than one user of network. Share Wi-Fi may be password protected with WEP/WPA/WPA2-PSK encryption or it may be open for use to everyone.

It doesn't matters whether the network you are connected to is password protected or open for all, if the hacker has access to the network then you are not secure! Also nowadays it is very easy for hackers to hack into a password protected network, and Black-hat hackers often do this by using "Kali Linux (The Hacker's OS)". So now I' am going to explain how does the attack works and how could you safeguard yourself.

When working on Internet, the data is being transmitted in discrete Packets, these packets carry the information sent by your Browser or any internet using application and data sent by Web Servers are also carried by such packets, these packets contain all your personal important information.

Say for example, you are connected to a Wireless Network and had opened a Web Browser in your device, now you are typing "http://google.com" and hits enter, now the browser sends some packets containing your info and the website name etc. to the MODEM/Router which in turn is connected to internet, the MODEM/Router then does some other tasks like asking the web server for the website or webpage and then when the router receives this information in packets, it then sends them to your browser which at least shows up the webpage. So this is how data is transmitted and received in packets.

Now, what is someone steals or monitors these packets? Yes you are right, he can have access to all the information and activities you are doing on internet, from login, to online payment, from a google search to a private chat and Audio/Video calls absolutely everything. This stealing of packets can cause you problems. A program called "Wireshark" can do this, it anonymously captures and stores all the packets on the hacker's computer, the hacker then have access to all your info.

Actually there is nothing much you can do for this. All you can do this that, always check whether someone unknown/suspicious is connected to the network to which you are connected, and this can be done only if you are the owner of the network. While you are using a shared or public Wi-Fi, you can be attacked and your privacy may be compromised, so never connect to public Wi-Fi and such networks where there is possibility that a hacker has access to the same network.

Turn off the auto-connect feature of your device. Don't login anywhere and do online payments and such serious things in public and shared Wi-Fi networks. Your private /home Wi-Fi networks can also be attacked, so always crosscheck that someone else is not connected to your network.
