Three-day Gangaur Utsav, celebrated under the auspice Rajasthan Tourism Department in Jaipur, concluded on April 3. This colourful festival in Jaipur, which is famous all over the world, was attended by both Indian and foreign tourists in good number.
A colourful procession was taken out from the city
palace with bands and folk dances of Rajasthan. A large number of
women participated in the festival with great fervour and devotion
who worshipped Gauri, the consort of Lord Shiva.
This year, the procession, with the image of Gauri,
started from the Zanani-Deodhi of the City Palace
and passed through
Tripolia Bazaar, Chhoti Chaupar, Gangauri Bazaar, Chaugan stadium and
finally converges at the Talkatora which was renovated and lake was
full of water with the boats plying around.
However, elephants were not included in the
procession this. People from all walks of life thronged the
procession route with great fervour.
During this season Navratri and Gangaur Utsav, the
local sweet dish called a ghewar is being sold like hot cakes. During
Navratri, local people buy ghewar to eat and distribute it among
their friends and relatives to strengthen the social bonds.
Gangaur festival is also celebrated in the
neighbouring states of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The festival
symbolizes marital bliss for women by worship of Goddess Parvati.
