Three-day Mahavir Jayanti festival in Jaipur to conclude today with solemnity and religious fervour
In Jaipur, three-day Mahavir Jayanti that began on April 9 will conclude today with religious fervour. The main celebration was held on Sunday, April 10, to commemorate the birth of Bhagwan Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara and the founder of Jainism.

The processions with tableau of Lord Mahavira were held in which men dressed in whites and women dressed in saffron and yellow sarees took part. In Jain temples, various rituals were performed and hymns from Jain scriptures were recited. Jain Munis and Sadhikas addressed the gatherings urging the followers to live a life of non-violence and simplicity.

On Mahavir Jayanti, the local statues of Lord Mahavira in various temples and open places are given a ceremonial bath called the abhisheka. The followers, engage themselves in fasting, charitable acts, visit temples, attend discourses, meditate and pray on this day.

The most typical part of the celebration is the day to reiterate and follow the path of virtues of Jain doctrine, which stresses equality between all forms of life, simple vegan life style, non-violence and self-control. The ultimate aim of life in Jainism is to obtain liberation from the cycle of reincarnations.

"One who cultivates an attitude of equality towards all living beings, mobile and stationary, can attain equanimity," is what Lord Mahavira had preached.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the people on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti saying, "Greetings on Mahavir Jayanti. We recall the noble teachings of Lord Mahavir, which continue to guide generations," he said.
