A quake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale jolted Sikkim on Sunday evening. A resident told merinews that reports about three people being dead and thirty three others having been injured are doing the rounds.
AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale jolted Sikkim with the epicentre lying 64 kilometres north-west from the state capital Gangtok. A resident of Gangtok, Kunzang Chuki Denzongpa who stays a kilometre away from Gangtok told merinews that news is strife about three people being dead and thirty three others injured. She also added that three shocks were felt and another one is expected apart from having congested phone lines and power outage. The tremors of the quake were felt as far as in the adjoining country, Bangladesh and the depth measured ten kilometres, as per the U.S Geological Survey.

A resident told Reuters that cracks have developed in some buildings in Gangtok. Most phone lines are down and there is no electricity now. People have come out on the street. However, authorities have gone on the record stating that the damage cannot be ascertained so soon and personnel from the National Disaster Management Authority have been trying to get in touch with the state government if at all they need any assistance, as reported by Reuters.So far, India has experienced numerous quakes and the last one had occurred on September 7 with its epicentre in Sonipat, a district in the northern state of Haryana.
