Three policemen arrested for raping and robbing a model in Mumbai
When on the other side of the world in New York, Aamir Khan is attending the Women of the World summit and taking part in a dialogue on violence against women, in India, crimes pertaining to the same thought is happening almost everyday. If we take the statistics of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) everyday 93 women are raped in India. In Mumbai, recently, a model became victim of the rape. What was different in her case was that she was assaulted and raped by none other than police itself, which is supposed to protect people.

Three people were arrested on Thursday for robbing and raping a model in Mumbai. The lady in question was so traumatized that she had to leave the city for few days after the incident took place on April 3.

She finally sought help from police commissioner Rakesh Maria via text message and went to meet him on Wednesday. Since her perpetrators were law makers and law keepers, it is understood why she took so much time to reach out to another policeman.

As was alleged by the victim, three men- two assistant inspectors Sunil Khapte and Suresh Suryavanshi, and constable R Kode on a tip that a prostitution racket is being run in Saki Naka locality raided the hotel where the model was. They came along with their informer- Sagar, Ibrahim, alias Ibbu, and a woman (whose name has been withheld). As was reported by all were in plainclothes and on arrival did not find any prostitution racket being run there.

However, they did not leave the matter there and threatened to put her behind bars on prostitution charges. She was assaulted, robbed of money and valuables worth 4.98 lakh. That was not all and her ordeal was still not over - she was taken to a nearby place (which she claimed to be a police station) and raped. She is undergoing a medical test, while the accused have been arrested and the police are trying to ascertain their part in the incident.

The accused have been booked under sections 376 (rape), 354A (sexual harassment), 384 (extortion), 341 (wrongful restraint), 342 (wrongful confinement), 323 (assault), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 34 (common intention) and 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) of the Indian Penal Code.
