Ensure with your airline for any special deals. Sometimes just shifting your departure date by a day or so can provide you a great saving.

Always check your tickets to make certain that they are precisely what you asked for and that you have the exact and confirmed booking.
Check with the airline, their baggage requirements/specifications before hand. You should know the number of items allowed, weight, size, etc. Tag all your bags properly with name and destination details.
