TN AIADMK strongly opposes of releasing life sentenced convicts
Surprisingly, many accused convicts are educated and literates who come from various disciplines like high school passouts, under graduates, post graduates and higher computer qualification.

THE OPPOSITION party in Tamil Nadu AIADMK chief and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J.Jayalalithaa has opposed strongly against the Tamil Nadu government's decision to release around 500 life convicts who have already spent 5-8 years of the declared sentence.

At present the DMK government took decision to release around 500 life convicts on the occasion of the first World classical Tamil Conference which is being held from 23rd to 27th June in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and many people are coming and enjoying the glitter view of the celebration.
AIADMK General Secretary J. Jayalalithaa has strongly opposed the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to release 500 life convicts to mark the first World Classical Tamil Conference being held at Coimbatore.

The opposition party leader told that to prevent occurrence of crime in the society , law has provided life sentence and premature release of the convicts only adds up crime and high point of misuse of authority not only in small ratio as it’s a huge number as these 500 convicts are in jail for having committed serious crimes.

The AIADMK Chief told that releasing the convicts would only increase the frequency of the crime.

At present there are around 14,447 prisoners who are serving sentence in jails. The convicts have been booked under different charges that comprises of T.P.D.A, CONFEPOSA, NSA amongst other convicts, remand prisoners and under trials. In all, 5400 convicts have been booked in the former cases.

Surprisingly, many accused convicts are educated and literates who come from various disciplines like high school passouts, under graduates, post graduates and higher computer qualification. Some infamous prisoners like Nalini, who was the prime accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and her husband are also lodged in these prisons. Nalini was awarded rigorous life imprisonment and her husband is on a death row.

In 2008, DMK government released 1,405 prisoners on the occasion of the birth centenary of DMK founder C.N.Annadurai and now again in the eve of World Classical Tamil Conference the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had plans of releasing convicts who are senior citizens on humanitarian grounds. The government has also drafted a proposal of raising the expectations of long term and short term serving prisoners who have been charged on different cases. The proposal is still under consideration.

As of now, the DMK government is contemplating the release of 500 prisoners but due to pressure from the opposition the situation might get tensed up if the ruling party does what it thinks is appropriate.
