TNPFTC condemns TN's VCK party chief Thirumavalavan's act of supporting tobacco industry
In an interview with Puthiyathalaimurai TV, Thirumavalavan, President of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) party in the state of Tamil Nadu has said that Vaiko's son being a distributor of Tobacco Industry products was not a matter of concern.
Thirumavalavan went on to mention that the distribution rights acquired by Vaiko 15 years back should not be taken into consideration. He also added that if the government banned the sale of tobacco then by itself the distribution would stop.

Such insensitive statements from political leaders have acquired resentment of Tamil Nadu People's Forum for Tobacco Control (TNPFTC). These instances clearly indicate the true interest of Tamil Nadu politicians. Their interest is more towards their benefit, rather than considering the best interest of the public. They are more business oriented than people oriented, said TNPFTC in a statement.

These instances show the apathy of Tamil Nadu politicians towards the health of the public. How can a person working for the benefit of the public partner with the Tobacco Industry that is responsible for the death of 10 lakh Indians annually. Also as per WHO FCTC Article 5.3 (which India has signed), People in the Policy Decision Making Process must not have any association with Tobacco Industries.

TNPFTC condemned the statements of Thirumavalavan who is supporting Tobacco Industries. Such statements can never be accepted. As a public figure and being a policymaker, the politicians need to be careful on the statement they are giving. Calling it a repeated incident TNPFTC has decided to represent this issue to the Election Commission against MDMK, VCK and any other political parties affiliated with tobacco industry

The representation would request the Election Commission to safeguard public health from politicians who support tobacco industries. Taking into consideration WHO FCTC Article 5.3, TNPFTC would also put forth their demand to the Election Commission, which would ensure that political parties are restricted from receiving any kind of funds/contribution from tobacco industries during the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections.
