The role of media in society is that of exposing the truth and spreading awareness. Ignorance and arrogance among those in this noble profession is tarnishing the image of the entire media. A little more show of humility can go long way.
THE INDIAN media enjoys unprecedented power today. It is disheartening however, to see that this power is often misused. A fairly recent example is that of Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who felt compelled to apologize for asking a media person to "shut up." It might have been a rude reply but what of that media person who made a false and ignorant allegation that '3 Idiot's' script was based completely on Chetan Bhagat's 'Five Point Someone?' It appears that the apology was made more for highlighting the media person's ignorance, than for being rude to him.
The instance shows media more in the wrong now that the accusation made on the script has been cleared. Chetan Bhagat no longer feels that he hasn't been given adequate credit. The media person too has accepted that he did not in fact know what he was talking about, but that of course hasn't found as much press attention than Mr. Chopra's 'rudeness'. The question we need to ask is whether Chopra was the only one in the wrong? Why did he have to apologize on national television? I am not raising this question because I am a '3 Idiots .' I am one of those who have read all the books written by Chetan Bhagat, at one go. So my concern is not biased. I am raising this issue because there are many instances like this of media overstepping its limits and this needs to be stopped. If the media's attitude is not checked now the time's mot far when a person has to think twice before raising the truth. Those responsible for exposing reality will in fact become a force suppressing it.
