Sabyasachi Panda is the main accused in killing of Vishwa Hindu Parisad leader Laxmana Nanda Saraswati way back in the year 2008 - an incident that led to communal riots in Kondhamal district. Panda was also instrumental of looting armoury the from Nayaghar police training school. He is even said to have been responsible for the abduction of two Italians in March this year. The two Italians were later released by him.

Most of his personal security personals have either surrendered before the police or some have been killed. However, conforming the expelling of the Maoist leader, a press release from Katakam Sudarshan alies Anand “Central Regional Bureau” - he is also in-charge of operations in Dandakaranya Forest, North Telengana and Andhra–Odisha border - stated, “Our central committee is ousting Sabyasachi Panda from the party, and declaring the fact to our party comrades in Odisha, the entire revolutionary masses and revolutionary camp in our country.”

“We are appealing to Odisha comrades, mass organizations and revolutionary – democratic masses to condemn Panda's enemies and not take an opportunistic stand towards our party, movement and leadership,” the release noted.

Panda’s removal has come after he wrote a 16-page letter to CPI (Maoists) General Secretary Muppala Laxman Rao alias Ganapati a month ago. In the letter, he said that the Maoists were resorting to mindless violence.
