ANOTHER YEAR has passed and people bid farewell to the year gone by and welcomed the
new year with a big bash. While some magic moments of the past year cheer our thoughts, other disastrous memories tear our hearts. Like every year, terrorism topped the chart with bloodshed across the globe. But in 2008, we saw some chart-topping movies, which helped people forget all the bloodshed and blasts.
Many major events hit the headlines and some gained international attention as well but a few caught peoples’ attention. One such incident was the November 26, 2008, terror attack in Mumbai, which shook the entire world. The wounds of serial blasts in two cities of India had not yet healed when the so called safest city of India was coloured with blood and this was the time when Indians demanded tightening of security measures instead of pleading for it again and again. And this was also the first time in the history when the slogan of ’Use your right ’not to vote’ became famous. Even the educated lot joined the protest. This event not only raised eyebrows at the international level but also put pressure on Pakistan to ban the terror outfits operating from it soil.
Shortly after that another news made headlines, which left the entire world amazed. An Iraqi journalist threw his shoes on American President George W Bush during a press conference. This event became more popular among children as within a few hours after the news made headlines, a game aimed at hitting shoes on Bush was uploaded in the Internet.
But the event, which made history and reinforced the idea that democracy is supreme was the election of Barack Obama as the President of America. No political leader in history has ever gained such recognition and support at the international level. From a child to an old man, every individual closely followed the election, anxiously waiting for a change. The 2008 US presidential election was rated as the top most news of the year by the world media.
Although, the global economic meltdown and job cuts brought disappointment but the election of Obama brought new hopes and every nation is now trying its best to beat the crisis.
With all these good and bad reminiscences of 2008, let’s welcome 2009 in high spirits.
