When will the sutak (period of abstention observed by the Hindus) period start?

According to astrology, this full lunar eclipse will take place on Friday, the full moon day, on July 27, and sutak period will commence 9 hours before the eclipse. That is, on July 27 from 2:54 pm.

Once period of abstention starts, many in India follow the rule of no eating or drinking during this period. However, patients, old people, children and pregnant women can eat and drink during this period. In India it is a practice to place basil leaves over cooked foods, water etc. just before the start of sutak period to neutralize the bad effects of lunar eclipse.

What precautions to take during the eclipse period?

We all know that the effect of moon on human beings is different at different periods. The moon affects both the physical attributes and spiritual inclination. According to holistic approach harmful rays are emitted during lunar eclipse which negatively affect humans and so it is advised to avoid performing some of the basic tasks during this period.

It is said that sleeping during the eclipse is not good and should be avoided except by patients, children and pregnant women. But since this eclipse will happen between midnight and early morning most of the people will be in deep slumber.

Second most important rule to be followed is to avoid food and water during this period. Travelling during this period is also discouraged.

One should not try to see the eclipse with open eyes (aided by scientific glasses). For spiritual seekers it is the right time to chant Mahamrityunjay mantra throughout the period of eclipse.
