Tough triangular contest in Andhra Pradesh
The Congress believes that the large turnout of women is an indication of the success of its various healthcare and welfare schemes. The Telugu Desam Party, however, believes that the Cash Transfer Scheme has struck a chord among poor women
THE SECOND phase of elections in Andhra Pradesh took place on April 23, with 20 Lok Sabha and 140 Assembly constituencies going to the polls. The polling was by and large peaceful, barring stray incidents of violence between the activists of rival political parties. With a turnout of 68 per cent, the result in Andhra Pradesh would be dependent on this phase of elections. There is a tough triangular contest between the Telugu Desam Party, Praja Rajyam Party and the ruling Congress. While Praja Rajyam’s Chiranjeevi’s home turf is West Godavari district, Chandrababu Naidu has a stronghold in Chandragiri district and Dr. Reddy is seeking re-election from home turf, Pulivendula in Kadapa district.

With over 20 million voters and half of them women and youth, the results will be unpredictable. The Congress believes that the large turnout of women is an indication of the success of its various healthcare and welfare schemes. The Telugu Desam Party, however, believes that the Cash Transfer Scheme has struck a chord among poor women. According to the Chiranjeevi-led Praja Rajyam Party (PRP), the large turnout of young voters is bound to help the PRP as ‘megastar’ Chiranjeevi enjoys a massive fan base among the youth.

Cross-voting was witnessed wherein voters decided on one party for Lok Sabha and another party for Assembly. Political experts say that this may lead to mixed results. They observe that this may mean that either of the three main parties or even the subsidiary parties may come to power.

After casting his vote in Pulivendula assembly seat in Kadapa, YS Rajashekhar reiterated that the Congress would win 230 Assembly seats and 36 Lok Sabha seats. On the other hand, Chandrababu Naidu claims: “TDP will get a majority in the state.”
