THE ISSUE of corruption raised by Anna Hazare and his call for election and education reforms has made the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) of India to get to the play the card of goading the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to introduce the lessons on the values of 'integrity and honesty' in its schools. According to D Purandeswari, the minister of state for Human Resource Development, the CVC has asked CBSE to introduce and increase the number of lessons on integrity and honesty in schools.

However, the minister in a written reply to question in Lok Shabha informed that the lessons on integrity and honesty were integrated in languages, science, social sciences and environmental education textbooks of the NCERT. The CBSE affiliated schools were already encouraging eco clubs, integrity clubs, heritage and clubs, etc., as co-curricular activities, she added. It may be noted that the CBSE has published teacher manuals on value education and decided to send a circular its schools for yearlong programmes and activities related to human values. But, many educators feel that the problematic education system provides a kiss of death to values when imparted as academic topics.
