All the nine trade unions registered under National Convention of Trade Unions have supported the Bandh call. It is expected that nearly six crore workers from these registered trade unions will be taking part in the bandh.
NATIONWIDE BANDH called by nine major trade unions has affected life in Kerala, Kolkata and Tripura, the three states were the Left is still powerful and has considerable influence. The 24-hour nationwide bandh starting from Tuesday has been called against rampant price rise, streamlining of Public Distribution System (PDS) and proper implementation of labour laws.
All the nine trade unions registered under National Convention of Trade Unions have supported the Bandh call. It is expected that nearly six crore workers from these registered trade unions will be taking part in the bandh. The call comes in right after two months, when BJP had called for a nationwide bandh because of price rise.Meanwhile, authorities said that they are doing their best to minimise the affect of the Bandh. Schools, colleges and private establishments have closed shop due to the bandh call, particularly in Left ruled states.
Due to the bandh, all major aircraft carriers have suspended services to Kolkata and more than 50 flights have been affected. Although the Left front has asked the masses to keep the strike peaceful, it has supported the call.However, Railway Minister Mamta Banerjee has strongly opposed the strike. All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) General Secretary and CPI MP Gurudas Dasgupta said that nearly six crore workers will participate in the strike across the country. Those employed in private sector will also join the strike in many places. He further added that AITUC, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), AIUTUC, TUCC, AICCTU, UTUC and federations of different categories of workers and employees will participate in the general strike, which has been called by Coordination Committee of Central Trade Unions headed by Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) President G Sanjeeva Reddy.
