THIS MAY not be the season to mark the sale of garments where people get offers like 'buy one get three free', but a trader from Jharkhand has adopted a similar idea to increase his sale of tyres by offering free onions on purchase of tyres. With rates shooting to around Rs 80 per kg in many states, people are now forced to compromise with the purchase of this vegetable.
"We are offering five kg onion free on the purchase of a truck tyre and one kg on the purchase of a car tyre," Satnam Singh Gambhir, a tyre seller at Kalimati Road in Sakchi in Ranchi said. Gambhir is also the president of All India Sikh Students' Federation of Bihar and Jharkhand. His move was meant to show dissatisfaction among people for the unexpected rise in prices of what is generally one of the cheapest vegetable in the past few days. Even earlier, he gave concession on the purchase of tyres, to give confidence people to cast votes during the last Assembly polls in Jharkhand.
Noted comedian from Punjab Jaspal Bhatti has adopted his unique mocking style and engaged the services of two Santa Claus' to buy onions to give as gifts this Christmas. "Common man will be much happier getting onions as gifts as the skyrocketing price of the vegetable has made it unaffordable for public,' he said in Chandigarh while buying the vegetable along with the Santas at a market here. 'Though, of course, we would be able to gift a very small sized onion to only a limited number of families,' he said, adding onions would be more welcoming than chocolates.
In Bhubaneswar, the Orissa Assembly experienced chaos over onion price rise with the ruling Biju Janata Dal members demanding a censure motion against the Centre and opposition accusing the state government of avoiding its responsibility. Farmers in Hubli too joined the protests by staging a 'Rasta Roko' before Agriculture Produce Market Committee's office demanding that the prices should not be allowed to fall down.
