Transcend differences to transform future: UN Chief Guterres on United Nations Day
Every year the UN and its member nations observe October 24th as United Nations Day (UND) across the world.

The observance marks that fall day in New York City in 1945 when nations ratified the Charter of the UN and launched humanity's second major attempt at forming a World Parliament. Although it started with just 51 member nations, the UN now has 193.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message for UND-2017 said, "Our world faces many grave challenges: widening conflicts and inequality; extreme weather and deadly intolerance; security threat including nuclear weapons. We have the tools and wealth to overcome these challenges. All we need is the will."

"The world's problems transcend borders. We have to transcend our differences to transform our future. When we achieve human rights and human dignity for all people – they will build a peaceful, sustainable and just world," he added.

He urged, "On United Nations Day, let us, 'We the Peoples', make this vision a reality."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his greetings to the UN on United Nations Day. "Greetings on UN Day. We appreciate UN's efforts in promoting world peace and laud the wide range of initiatives under its guidance," Modi said.
