GOVERNOR, LT General (Retd) SK Sinha today called for enriching knowledge of farmers on latest farming and transferring agri-research to the fields for optimum productivity.

Sinha was addressing farmers and agriculture scientists after inaugurating the main faculty building of faculty of agriculture in the Chatta campus of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), this morning.

The governor said that sustained research in the field of agriculture and hard toil of farmers had steered India from a food deficit to a food surplus country. In mid 40s, India with three times lesser population than the present and more landmass under cultivation was a food deficit country, he said, adding that due to technological development the country became self-reliant and even attained food surplus.

Exhorting scientists to transfer their research and knowledge to the farming community, the governor lauded the progress made by SKUAST, Jammu in recent years and appreciated its infrastructure development.

He said that he felt elated to interact with farmers in Kathua, Rajouri and Bhaderwah through e-connectivity. “This holds great promise for future,” he maintained. He also complimented vice chancellor, Prof Nagendra Sharma for his dynamic stewardship and innovative Land Health Card system, which was given a kick start from today.

“These initiatives will go a long way in establishing India as a superpower of future,” he said, while stressing upon the need for further improvement in productivity.

Sinha also referred to his earlier stint as a soldier living in a tent in the periphery of the present campus for two years, some 60 years ago and mentioned how famous the RS Pura rice used to be. The infrastructure that he inaugurated made him feel proud and happy, as it was perhaps better than the best in the country, he said.

Sharma said that Jammu division is bestowed with various agro-climatic condition and zones, which provide ample opportunity for the scientists to come up with area specific recommendations for adoption by the farmers so as to give maximum benefit for the poor and marginal farmers for their socio-economic upliftment.

About e-learning, Sharma said that, through this programme, they are directly connected through information e-kiosks at block level with e-studio based at Chatha campus, so as to solve the farmers problems online and get the latest information. He said e-studio has already been established at main campus at Chatta, whereas the setting of these at 20 other locations is in advance stage of installation.

On infrastructure development, the vice chancellor said that his team worked tirelessly to translate the vision of the chancellor and the governor into a reality. He said that the governor’s motivation remained a guiding force for the University to expand its activities.
