A TRIBAL youth Sikunu Melka of Podapadar village under Narayanpatna Block of Koraput district was killed by Maoists.
Panic spread in Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon block soon after the killing of the tribal youth, who had withdrawn his membership from Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangha (CMAS), Narayanpatna under pressure from the police. The police has appointed several young boys belonging to tribal community as special police officials to collect information of the strangers, who are visiting Narayanpatna's remote villages and to collect information about the whereabouts of the members of Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangha, who are hiding inside the forest to avoid police arrests. This present trend if continued may lead to more causalities in Koraput district, sources said. Meanwhile, civil society and Intellectuals of the area have called for withdrawal of the security forces, removal of special police officials posted couple of months back for anti Naxal operations and allowing both tribals and Dalits to cultivate the barren cultivable land seized by Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangha, Narayanpatna from the liquor vendor and land lords earlier.
Police is doing more harm than good. Now the intellectuals have come forward and demanding their withdrawal. This shows that they are quite accommodative with the maos whom media has always painted in wrong colors. The requirement of the hour is to remove the corrupt elements present in the area who are up in arms to drive the tribal s out. Tribals are forced to take up arms to defend their own existence. Media is wrongfully coloring them as Maoist movement. It is the survival movement against police and para military who is supporting those who has business interest in the area.
