As ADC elections draw closer extremist forces are preparing for another rise in Tripura yet again. However the government is believed to have prior intelligence of extremist plans and it is hoped that they will be foiled.
AFTER A steady decline in the number of terrorist incidents for last several years, the extremists are trying to rejuvenate once again in Tripura. They are putting pressure upon the innocent tribal youths to join in their camps. Their over ground agents are reportedly moving around in some parts of the hilly regions for the purpose of alluring teen aged boys and girls to take up arms against the state for the cause of establishing ‘Swadhin’ Tripura.
An anonymous source in the state police department said that the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) is trying to over come the ongoing recession in organizational strength by using the complicated conditions, normally seen during the period of elections. The leaders, still based in Bangladesh, have already made a plan in this regard.
Though, yet not declared the elections to the 28 member Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) is expected to be held in April this year. One of the tribal based political parties, IPFT, has been trying to create a wave by raising the demand for a separate state in the ADC area. At present no notable public reaction or support is evident on this demand. But a section of intellectuals are apprehensive that because of continuous negative propaganda by the ruling coalition, against the demand, it may get the status of an ‘issue’ in the near future and complicate the political and social scenario of the state. Because divisive forces like NLFT may launch an attempt to exploit the situation and create a rift between the state and the center. According to sources, the state has related intelligence inputs. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has, in his recent visit to interior areas, alerted the people of the renewed attempts of banned armed groups. He cautioned the public, particularly the tribal populace that the extremists are trying to rejuvenate. They are putting pressure upon the innocent tribal youths to join in their camps. It needs to be mentioned here that due to rigorous offensive operations by the security forces in the last few years almost all the banned outfits in the state have lost ground. Moreover, recent extradition treaty between the governments of India and Bangladesh has given a serious blow to them. Protecting base camps in the neighboring country will soon be a big challenge for them, because, as sources across the border say, a Bangladesh Army operation is imminent.
