Trump's Attorney General removes himself from campaign probes
US President Trump it seems has suffered another blow with his Attorney General removing himself from campaign probes.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions withdrew on Thursday from probes into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential elections. It had emerged Sessions had contacts with Russian officials while he was involved with President Donald Trump's campaign.

Sessions has however refused to accept that it was wrong on his part to not disclose during Senate testimony that he had met the Russian ambassador last year. He said that the meetings were in his capacity as senator and not as a campaign aide.

"I have recused myself in the matters that deal with the Trump campaign," Sessions told reporters at a news conference.

"I never had meetings with Russian operatives or Russian intermediaries about the Trump campaign," Sessions added.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi repeated a call for Sessions to resign.

"His narrow recusal and sorry attempt to explain away his perjury were totally inadequate," Pelosi said.

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee have demanded that the FBI conduct a criminal investigation into Sessions' statements to Congress about his communication with Russian officials.

US intelligence agencies after conducting detailed investigations have concluded that Russia had hacked and leaked Democratic emails during the election campaign as part of an effort to shift the voter wave in Trump's favour.

Trump however backed Sessions, saying that the Democrats had politicized the issue. He also called the whole controversy a "total witch hunt."
