TODAY TSLA has hit the market through an initial public offering (IPO). The news announced the explosive debut of Tesla Motors Inc stock. Investors are bidding up the shares toward the top of the projected range.

The IPO is currently priced at $17 per share. However prior to the IPO TSLA estimated that each share would be between $14 and $16. Additionally, the company lifted the number of shares offered from 11.1 million to 13.3 million.

TSLA has already raised $783 million in venture capital and government loans and it is hoped that it might raise roughly $226 million in capital via the IPO. Tesla is the first American automaker to debut on a major exchange since Ford Motor in 1956.

The net proceeds from the offering and the concurrent private placement will be used for the development of TSLA's Model S and planned Model S manufacturing facility. Tesla’s electronic vehicle has been the first to be federally-approved vehicles that appeals to the environmentally-friendly sect.

Tesla has sold less than 1,100 of its Roadster models and aims at selling 10 per week. Without future growth potential, it doesn’t seem like a great value for shareholders.

However before making any investments, one must keep in mind that Tesla has yet to turn a profit, since its 2003 inception, and is seeping into the competitive market amidst some serious global economic challengers.
