Tulsidas' Ramayana responsible for sufferings of Indian women?
Festival of Dussehra - the victory of right over wrong is round the corner but Indian women are still suffering. For reason best known to him, Tulsidas has made all efforts to decry women as a lesser being in his writing. This has made a lasting impact on Indian psyche towards women.

THE RAMAYANA of Tulsidas was written 500 years after the actual incidents had taken place. He had the gift of writing in very easy understandable prose - the language of aam admi. So his Ramayana became almost revered book of religion while the Ramayana of Valmiki, written at the time when the events actually took place has already been forgotten.

For reason best known to Tulsidas he has made all efforts to decry women as a lesser being in his writing. This has made a lasting impact on Indian psyche towards women. Let us take some instances from the sacred Ramayana.

King Dashrath gave some Vachan (promises) to one of his wives, Kaikeyee that he will ensure the son of Kaikyee Shri Bharat ascends the throne and send Ram, his eldest son on 14 years of exile. Kaikkyee played on this promise and made Ram go on exile. Why blame Kaikyee? Any mother will play these palace games. The fault lies with King Dashrath; he should have done what is right being the King. So why he is not talked about as a villain of the peace in Ramayana why only Kaikeyee?

When Ram, Sita and Laxman had reached the thick of jungle, Ravan appeared as a golden deer and Sita told Ram to get her this deer. Tulsi Das blames Sita for sending out Ram on a deer chase. Why? Ram was a known warrior and he fully knew that on him rests the safety of Sita so he could have told Sita that 'no this is not the time to chase a deer golden or not but to ensure one's own safety.

Nevertheless he went after the deer after instructing Laxman that he should protect Sita at all costs. In otherwords duties of Laxman were well defined and his job was to protect Sita, come what may.

As the story goes there came rumbling sound, ‘He Ram’ and Sita got worried about Ram. She wanted Laxman to go in search of Ram. Laxman was rightly reluctant, but as per story, Sita was bent upon Laxman going and said so in no uncertain words. Finally, Laxman also left, leaving behind a Laxman Rekha which Sita was not supposed to cross.

Surely Laxman was also a reputed warrior; how did he leave Sita alone against Ram's orders? Now Ravana appears on the scene after Laxman has gone, as a priest and requesting Sita for water. Sita was not to cross the Laxman Rekha, but to give water to the 'priest' she crossed it and Ravan abducted her.

In this entire story, Sita is blamed for everything. Frst that she sent Ram on a deer chase, second she sent Laxman in search of Ram and then she herself crossed the Laxman Rekha. There is no blame placed on Ram or Laxman when in actual fact they are totally to be blamed for being so confused and leaving Sita alone.

After Ram won the war, only Sita was asked to go through Agni Parikhsa regarding her chastity. Why only her chastity what about Ram? Either Lord Ram should have insisted that he will also give this test or else there will be no test. In any case why these tests? What poor Sita could have done if Ravan would not have been a gentleman?

Then again, the story tells us how a Dhobi tells his wife who was away from him for a week that he, unlike Ram won't accept her. Is this what we want to teach future generations of Hindus? Then when Sita gave birth to Love and Kush - two sons of Ram, Lord Ram again wanted to get her back which she as a self respecting lady refused. Need of the hour is that we must not read Tulsidas' Rmayan alone as Gospel truth. We must also read Valmiki's Ramayan and then come to any conclusion. Besides Tulsi Das should have praised the wife of Laxman also who sacrificed her 14 years of youth for the sake of not being a burden on Laxman in his duty to protect Ram And Sita.

Hello Good Sir, I too have been reading the Ramcharitmananas and i agree with all the points Amit made. You tell Amit to continue reading his version, however, there is only one version of the Manas that is being published now. Many of the points you have mentioned are actually not mentioned in the Manas. One other point Amit did not mention is how you said Sita was banished. According to the Manas, Sita was not banished. In the Uttarkand of the Manas all that is mentioned is how Ram and Sita had sons named Luv and Kush, thats all. If anything, Tulsidas has brought out the true fighting spirit of women from how Sati fought against his father for her choice in marrying Shiva, to Sita fighting for her right to go to the forest by her own choice, Sita's demand on Lakshman to go forth and save her husband, and how she ruthlessly scolded Ravan for being her oppressor. Sita even called forth for the fire trial, it was her choice, and being a woman of ancient times, men actually respected their wishes to the full extent. My dear brother, I encourage you to read the Manas once again with an open heart and open mind. Your friend, Kash

Dear Brigadier Arun Bajpai, I read your article and sharing honestly what I found here. First I got to know that you have never read Tulasikrit Ramayana at all and if read so unfortunately you could either read it as a novel-book or didn't read thoroughly. I am reading Tulasikrit Ramayana for 5 years everyday repeatedly but I don't find myself so confident to pick error. I can feel the facts of Ramayana as it is written and would confidently can make anyone sure that it is not responsible for suffering of Indian Women at all. Please check the following errors you may ignored below; 1:- Kaikyee was promised for two wishes; she got her wish fulfilled. As per contemporary rule only Eldest son had right to get the throne. Kaikyee got that wish fulfilled. She knoew Rama that he will never oppose Bharat as King but her wish to sent Rama for 14 years exile is undoubtedly cunning aspect of her being mother. Remember there was no difference in other mothers and sons. 2:- You write Ravana was appeared as Golden Beer before Sita shows that you haven't read it thoroughly, it was "MAAREECH" and Please mentioned those DOHA and CHOUPAI where Tulasidas blamed Sita for it? 3:- I never found that Sita is everywhere blamed for everything. It was Sits's wish to bring golden beer, Ram chased, Sita bent on Luxman to go even when both knew that Rama his self is sufficient for any odd situation, Luxman contempted his elder brother. remember that time it was more than the crime. It is not the question of blame. Being social and family values oriented you can better judge, if you could keep justifying your point aside in you article refering to the subject. 4:- In this point you are surly failed to convinced and it shows that you really never read Tulasikrit Ramayan carefully. Sita was not forced for Agnipariksha. If you read Tulasikrit Ramayan; in "Aranya Kand" Sita was handed over to Agni Dev and Ravana took away only her form not real Sita and Agni Pariksha was the way to get real sita back. If you consider the contemporary values of being mother, father, brother, king, you will better judge why and how Tulasikrit Ramayan presents and form of above mentioned relations and responsibilities. Ram- Sita is ideal role model of Hindu Men and women and how much we follow him/ her?. I would request you to read Tulsikrit Ramayan once again and I would wait for your next article. Thanks and regards. Amit Srivastav
