Turner Broadcasting Asia Pacific Supports World Aids Day with Regional Premiere of THE LAZARUS EFFECT
Catch the premiere of The Lazarus Effect on 1 December, Wednesday at 1:40 p.m. exclusively on WB channel.
TURNER BROADCASTING Asia Pacific will support World Aids Day on December 1 with the regional premiere of The Lazarus Effect, a documentary that raises awareness of the transformative effect of life-saving antiretroviral therapy (ART) on people living with HIV and AIDS in Africa.

Directed by Lance Bangs and produced by Spike Jonze, The Lazarus Effect will premiere on Turner’s WB movie channel in India and on truTV in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Singapore, The Philippines and Vietnam. The initiative is the work of the Global Fund’s largest private sector contributor.

Highlighting the impact of the life-saving ART therapy on people living with HIV, The Lazarus Effect depicts people whose lives have been transformed from debilitating illness to a healthier, more stable life in as little as three months. It also shows how two antiretroviral pills a day that cost around 40 cents can reverse the devastating impact of HIV, bringing renewed hope and opportunity.

Sunny Saha, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Turner Entertainment Networks, Asia, said, “We are pleased to be supporting with this important initiative by leveraging the power and reach of our networks in Asia. The Lazarus Effect is a compelling documentary and we hope that its premiere on WB India and truTV across South East Asia will inspire action and support.”

The Lazarus Effect Premiere: Wednesday, December 1, 2010

WB India: 1:40 p.m.

truTV:
1:00 p.m. (Maldives); 1:30 p.m. (Sri Lanka); 3:00 p.m. (Indonesia, Vietnam); 4:00 p.m. (Philippines, Singapore)

Preventing HIV

Important progress has been achieved in preventing new HIV infections and in lowering the annual number of AIDS-related deaths. The latest UNAIDS report shows that the rate of new HIV infections has declined by 20 percent in the last 10 years. However, the number of people living with HIV/AIDS is still rising. By the end of 2008, 33.4 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS, 22.4 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa. The same year, more than 14.1 million children in sub-Saharan Africa were estimated to have lost one or both parents to AIDS.

Expanded access to aids treatment has been the main cause of a decline in AIDS-related deaths in recent years, with more than 4 million people accessing the medication worldwide by the end of 2008 - a significant increase from 2001 when virtually no-one with HIV was receiving antiretroviral therapy in developing countries. However, out of a total of 9.5 million people in developing and transitional countries in immediate need of life-saving HIV drugs, this reflects access for only 42% of those in urgent need.
