Twenty-two-day long `Jawab Do Dharna' ends in Jaipur
In Jaipur, the twenty two-day long 'Jawab Do Dharna' spearheaded by noted activist and Magsaysay Award winner Aruna Roy of Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sanghatan at the Shaheed Smarak ended on June 21.

The dharna was organized to press for the demand of a law that would ensure transparency and accountability in governance.

After the Right to Information, this is another major movement by Roy to press for an accountability bill. Various individuals and civil rights groups took the pledge to work for a powerful legal platform to ensure transparency and accountability in the government's way of functioning.

According to the activists, the way the things are functioning at the government level, a law is urgently required to empower common people to become the watch-dogs on various governmental projects and programmes.

The dharana had been pressing for the bill to enlist social audit of the performance of government departments and people's participation in governance to ensure transparency and accountability in the work of government along with an effective grievances redressal system.

A draft of the proposed bill was circulated for wider public consultations by civil rights groups before the next phase of the dharna. It was asserted that the next dharna would be a longer one and press harder for an accountability bill that includes citizens' charters for all government departments.
