Two-day alumni meet of former Kurukshetra University students held in Panipat
A two-day alumni meet of ex-students of 1968 physics batch of Kurukshetra University was held at Skylark Tourist Resort in Panipat of Haryana on November 4 and 5 in which their spouses also participated.

Not only were life's experiences exchanged but a discussion on use of non-art for learning and cognitive development was also held. The participants were of the view that there was a need to incorporate the use some elements of visual and musical arts in physics learning to make the subject more inclusive and cognitively effective. These aspects will be able to make physics instruction to accommodate students with different styles of learning along with making it girl friendly.

Also, the issue of self-study skills and process-based learning was brought up during the meet. Physics pedagogy was emphasised for disciplinary and interdisciplinary approached to learning. One of the alumni was interviewed for the importance of dual code in learning since diagrams, visual symbols and graphics were needed to become integral part of physics instruction. In this regard the role of sketch notes in preparing revision material was emphasized.

The meet recommended that for improving the visibility of girls opting for physics courses, both the structure of the text which is more masculine in nature and the style of classroom discourses should be changed with emphasis on cooperative and collaborative learning methods. Also, age old conventional practical exercises need to be replaced by more alternative and open-ended experiments.

It was decided that the next meet should be held in Yamuna Nagar town of Haryana in the month of November, 2018. It was decided that the meet should also combine fun with learning with short excursion to nearby places of interest. There should also be a short cultural programme to entertain one another.

The collage in the inset has been prepared by an alumnus who is good at photography.
