Two-day medical conference on "Osteoporosis: Millennium Killer" held in Jaipur
The East Zone Chapter of Indian Menopause Society organized a two-day conference on December 17 and 18 on the topic "Osteoporosis: Millennium Killer". The conference was marked with paper presentations, talks, panel discussions and group discussions as usual.

Medical fraternity considers osteoporosis as a silent killer and its associated risk of bone fractures is fast becoming a serious public health issue in the country more so for women. According to some estimates, it is prevalent among almost one-third of postmenopausal women. For osteoporosis risk diagnosis bone mineral density (BMD) has become the single most important measurement.

It is said that the most significant sites for osteoporotic fractures among women are the spine and femoral neck ones; therefore, the central sites are the best prognostic factor of osteoporotic fractures.

It is often said that to prevent and mitigate osteoporosis, healthy lifestyle choices including vitamin and mineral therapy are needed. Moreover, safe home environments, appropriate intake of calcium, vitamin D and protein rich diets help a lot in reducing the risk.

Also, weight-bearing and resistance exercises are often recommended for preventive purposes. For elderly people, fall prevention programmes are organized to prevent osteoporosis-related fractures and injuries.
