Two percent charity quota of PSUs being misused
Although the election code of conduct bars any government advertisement once the code is declared, but in the election year there is a deluge of official advertisements glorifying the political rulers
AT A recently held ‘National Consultation on Right to Information’ in New Delhi, a shocking information was revealed about political misuse of two-percent charity fund allowed from profits of pubic sector undertakings.

Political rulers (concerned ministers) misuse camps for ‘public welfare schemes’ set up out of their charity funds by putting advertisements, hoardings, banners etc with their photos for these camps. Although the election code of conduct bars any government advertisement once the code is declared, but in the election year there is a deluge of official advertisements glorifying the political rulers.

It’s time that election code rules are implemented on a permanent basis. There should be a regulation that public sector undertakings may not be allowed to put photos of living personalities in any of their advertisements or publicity campaigns.

Rather, this rule should be followed by all government departments in tune with Manmohan Singh’s desire, while taking oath as the country’s prime minister.
