The two-week spell of school-based workshops from January 15 to 29 in twenty one senior secondary schools of Kurukshetra and Karnal districts of Haryana concluded on 29th January with the last two workshops at Ladwa. At least 2000 students were reached out through these workshops.
According to the organizers of the workshop, Dr Des Raj Vij, need-based workshops were well received both by students and teachers since they were contextualized and customized as desired by the schools. Since science subjects are process-based and have their own terminology and vocabulary, it was necessary to relate common language with the subject - based terminology for effective classroom communication of the science along with doing science.
The students were given the planned and systematic experiences to associate the common names of concepts with their scientific and technical names through the analysis of the experiences. The hands-on experience and study skills were central to the workshop, said the resource person. The participants of the workshop, under the guidance of these teachers, were given the learning task of making a table of definition consisting of columns titled the name of the term, properties or attributes, functions and remarks or composition.
The participants reacted favourably to the workshops and demanded a separate and intensive workshop on self-study skills and higher order thinking skills in consonance with the comprehensive and continuous evaluation scheme.
