The CPM backed LDF and the Congress backed LDF in Kerala have so far been tied in a neck and neck competition in the Kerala state assembly elections. Although the UDF has taken charge in most of the constituencies, LDF needs to pull in more votes.
WITH THE CPM led LDF and the Congress led UDF heading towards a photo finish in Kerala, the early trends, which have emerged, clearly indicate that the Congress led UDF will be the undisputed champion in the Kerala state assembly election results. As the voting count continues, it has been observed that the Congress led UDF has its nose slightly ahead across the total of 70 seats. Whereas, the CPM led LDF is marching ahead in 66 seats.
Although Chief Ministerial contenders from CPM and Congress viz V.S Achuthanandan and Oomen Chandy respectively won the assembly polls with considerable margins, another surprising element in the Kerala assembly election is former Kerala Chief Minister K. Karunakaran's son K. Muraleedharan. Muraleedharan claimed his first major victory when he defeated his contender, a Left-backed candidate from Vattiyoorkavu of Thiruvananthapuram.M K M Premnath, the UDF backed candidate from Vatakara segment was leading by over 1,000 votes, as per the early counting trends. The picture was similar in Sulthanbattery in Wayanad district, if not numerically, when Congress backed C Balakrishnan took charge by 348 votes from his nearest CMP rival E A Sankaran.
However, in the northern part of Kozhikode, A Pradeepkumar, the CPM backed candidate was leading by 68 votes against his Congressional rival P V Gangadharan. So far, it has been recorded that the CPM led LDF candidates are leading in Dharmadam, Nadapuram and Kozhikode North whereas, the Congress backed UDF has taken charge in Kalpetta, Vatakara, Varkala, Kazhakoottam, Thodupuzha and Manjeri.
