UN celebrates 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence'
The UN and its various agencies such as UN-Women, women's groups, social activists and NGOs observed the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25th November with the theme "Leave no one behind: end violence against women and girls".

Many landmarks of the world were decorated with orange lights on the day.

According to the UN, violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today.

 "Gender inequality persists worldwide. Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls will require more vigorous efforts, including legal frameworks, to counter deeply rooted gender-based discrimination that often results from patriarchal attitudes and related social norms, as stated by the UN Secretary-General, in his latest report on progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals," stated the UN.

On the occasion the observance the UN highlighted the disturbing fact that violence against women was the most extreme form of discrimination and raised concern about the violence against women in the form female genital mutilation/cutting.

The UN urged the world community to intensify the efforts to achieve gender equality since it was helpful in preventing conflicts. It stressed actions for women's inclusion, leadership and protection,
