ACCORDING TO Tomas Ojea Quintana, a UN human rights expert, who had visited Myanmar some time ago, has expresed his disappointment about the developments in the electoral process in that country.
He has termed the current electoral process in Myanmar 'deeply flawed. General elections in Myanmar are scheduled for Nov 7. Quintana had submitted a report on human rights in Myanmar, which was presented to the 192-nation UN assembly for debate. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has already endorsed the report.
According to Quintana, "There has been no release of political prisoners. The high costs and limited time for registration have hampered the participation of many political parties". Ethnic parties and candidates have been excluded and elections cancelled in 300 villages. "It is all the more necessary for the authorities to ensure that the elections are conducted in an inclusive, credible, participatory and transparent manner," Ban commented. "In this regard, I reiterate my call for the release of all political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, as the clearest signal of such commitments," he added.Meanwhile, the Burmese exiles living in India have also questioned the validity of elections being held by the military junta and asserted that it was a farce being perpetrated in the name of democracy.
