UN observes 'International Day of Family Remittances' and 'World Elder Abuse Awareness Day'
The UN agencies and social groups celebrated International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) on the 16 June. The United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) coordinated the IDFR activities across the globe.

"The day recognizes the contribution of over 200 million migrants to improve the lives of their 800 million family members back home, and to create a future of hope for their children. Half of these flows go to rural areas, where poverty and hunger are concentrated, and where remittances count the most," states the UN website by calling upon governments, private sector entities, as well as the civil society, to find ways that can maximize the impact of remittances through individual, and/or collective actions.

Linking IDFR with SDGs, UN points out, "The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in September 2015, is a global commitment to eradicate poverty and achieve sustainable development by 2030, ensuring that no one is left behind. Its 17 specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address the major challenges facing the world today."

Also, on June 15, the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was observed that the elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world, and it deserves the attention of the international community. There is a need to mitigate abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.
