UN to celebrate International Nowruz Day on March 21
Various UN agencies will be celebrating the International Nowruz Day, which was established by the United Nation in 2010 as proposed by several countries that share this holiday such as India, Afghanistan, Albania, Azerbaijan, former Macedonia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan.

UNESCO, that coordinates the observance, has recognized Nowruz as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as a cultural tradition observed by numerous people. Being a New Year spring festival, celebrants mark Nuvroz to 'pay their respect to nature and wish for a better future'.

According to UNESCO, Nowruz is an ancestral festivity marking the first day of spring and the renewal of nature. It promotes values of peace and solidarity between generations and within families as well as reconciliation and neighbourliness, thus contributing to cultural diversity and friendship among people and different communities.

"For over 3,000 years, millions of people across the world have been celebrating the arrival of spring every year. From western, central and southern Asia to the Caucasus, the Balkans and other regions, peoples of different cultures, religions and languages have come together to share the values of Nowruz," informs the official website of the observance.

At UNESCO headquarters in Paris, the day will be marked by dance, poems, songs, meals and other social practices related to Nowruz festival. Last year UNESCO chief Irina Bokova had said, "At a time when violent extremism seeks to destroy diversity and freedoms, Nowruz is a reminder of the power of culture and heritage to build resilient and sustainable societies. It is a source of confidence and belonging for all."
