The family members of the couple alleged that, the child was suffering from congenital heart defect (CHD), which is a birth defect in the structure of the heart and blood vessels. As the health and family welfare department of Assam is running a scheme launched on 2009, in collaboration with Bangalore’s Narayana Hrudayalaya for treating children below 14 years with CHD, therefore the couple had been visiting the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), for enrolling their child’s name in the scheme.
However, according to family members of the couple, the doctors at GMCH refused to put their name on the list as Barun Kalita, the father had no BPL card. But, the GMCH authorities sidelined the allegations.
Due to denial form the GMCH for treatment, the couple had to move from one private hospital to another and in the later stage, as the cost for treatment was extremely high and unable to afford it; the couple chose the path of suicide and decided to put an end to everything.
The incident received condemnation from all corners of the state. Though the governments of Assam hasn’t issued any statement so far and as of now no organization have come forward registering their protest, however the Assam faction of Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Part(AAP) has decided to hold a protest today at Dighalipukhuri, Guwahati.
In an event via social media, initiated by AAP, Assam founder member Sameer Sharma, the party expressed its deepest sorrow and sheerly condemned the Assam government, as it was due to negligence on the part of the Health and Family Welfare Department that such mournful episode took place.
Sharma further affirmed that, they would continue to raise voice against all such acts and would not bow down under any suppression by the authorities. He further stated, “Even if the police make any arrest, though we will allow them to do so, but won’t call off our protest.” The organization sidelined seeking of any bail in case of arrest and averred to undertake indefinite fast in the jail premises itself.
