Unable to pay hospital bill, Odisha couple sells infant; police arrest 4 including an ASHA worker
On Saturday, Odisha police arrested four people in connection with a case of allegedly selling a new born baby.

The gross human act came to light after the couple alleged that they were forced to sell their new born baby. The arrested people include an ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activists) worker and a member of the nursing home staff as well.

The couple has been identified as Moharana and Gitanjali, residents of Righagada village.

The incident took place in Odisha's Kendrapara district. The couple have allegedly claimed that they were forced to sell the baby for Rs 12,000.

The complainant has alleged that the ASHA worker stopped him from taking his pregnant wife to a government hospital and instead forced him to take her to a private nursing home with better facilities. The pregnant lady was able to successfully deliver the child. The couple has reportedly claimed that they did not know that the private hospital is going to charge them and were under the impression that it is free.

And later, the hospital billed them for Rs 7,500 which the couple was unable to pay. As the couple was unable to pay the bills, the ASHA worker allegedly convinced them to sell the baby. As per reports, the infant was sold to a childless couple for Rs 12,000.

While this is the couple's version, the ASHA worker has claimed that the couple had two daughters and were disappointed with the birth of a third one and voluntarily sold the baby.

The infant has been rescued from the hospital where she was admitted as her health was not stable.

The police have registered a case against the accused under IPC Section 372 (selling minors for unlawful and immoral purpose) and provisions of Juvenile Justice Act. Police have arrested 4 people in the case including the ASHA worker.
